Henry's 18 Months Old

Time for a Henry life update! He's now 18 months old and my what a difference six months can make.

13 months old. 

Sporting one of daddy's sailor baby outfits.

He now is fully rocking a curly mullet that I just can't bring myself to cut yet. It is looking a little out of control though. Maybe I need to invest in some hair product to keep those crazy curls tamed?

14 months old. 

This boy loves spaghetti and making a mess. 

Teeth have been popping in like crazy, creating a not so happy little boy. He even had his first dentist appointment recently to investigate a chipped tooth. No concern, thank goodness.

15 months old.

Speaking of little boy. Where did my BABY go? I forgot that somewhere between 12 months and 18 months they just suddenly lose their baby attitude. He's more independent, wild, talkative, opinionated. The list could go on forever. I love it though. Watching him grow into his own little person has got to be one of the coolest things ever as parents to watch. He is still just as sweet and cuddly as ever. I'm hoping this is a personality trait that sticks around.

16 months old.

 

He loves to climb! 

I mentioned wild. Yes. He is so very...boy! He gets knocked down and pops right back up. Half the time he has a bloody knee and I don't even know it because he doesn't complain. He's a daredevil! He loves to jump off the couch (onto pillows), belly flop into pools, be thrown into the air and climb on everything. And at the end he stills runs to his momma and demands kisses.

17 months old.

18 months old.

"Cheeessseee"

One of my favorite authors/admirers/Instagram followers (Jen Hatmaker) explained it best when she wrote this on her Instagram account: "Do you ever worry just a tiny bit that you are living in your best days?? The ones you'll describe as the greatest ones of them all in 30 years?"

All of this. Days with Emerson, Henry and our happy little family just could not seem any better. If I could pause time, now would be it so I could hold these babies just a little longer.

Love making these memories and love my boys to pieces. Here's to many more half birthday's to get sappy about : )

Henry's 12 Months Old

We made it to the BIG first birthday! A few tears may have been shed by myself, but mostly it was a happy day full of reminiscing over the past year. And oh what a wonderful, challenging year it was.
Henry taught all of us so much, and hopefully we taught him a thing or two :)

Other than turning one, another big first for the month was Christmas! He met Santa and did NOT like him, understandable. He opened a present from under the tree all by himself and without me knowing, but great job, bud. He enjoyed celebrating Christmas in Oklahoma with tons of cousins. And he certainly enjoyed opening and playing with all his new toys.

This boy would not sit still!

Here is what all happened this month:

Eating: I started weaning Henry from breast milk. He now only gets breast milk three times a day and gets cows milk with his snacks. He took to cows milk like a champ. He is definitely easier at transitioning to new things, unlike his brother.

Activity: I've noticed Emerson and Henry interacting and "talking" more to each other. I love watching their relationship grow. Henry has started to cruise the furniture and stand up independently, but I still feel like we are still a long ways away from walking. He is also now waves and points to things.

Sleeping: Henry has been hit or miss on naps lately. Some days he takes only one, other days two. It's nice to be able to skip that morning nap and be able to get out and about. But he really needs two naps still. On the days he just takes one, he is cranky and most likely over tired and won't nap well. We are just in the glorious phase of nap transitioning.

Doctor Visit Stats:

• Height: 2 ft, 5 in (75%)

• Other: We switched pediatricians and I could not be happier! Sometimes the hardest part about moving into a new community is not knowing who and where to go for health care. After living here for over a year, I received lots of good advice about who to go to. Our new pediatrician got lots of great reviews and her husband is a family doctor in the same office, so it's a one stop shop, so to speak.

Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

• Hair is still thin, but it seems to be getting darker and curler in the back, so in other words, he has a mullet.
• Finally seem to be gaining weight. Love seeing rolls on those thighs.
• Said his first word, "Dada."
• Loves giving kisses.
• Has mastered walking in a walker when we play outside. 
• Wears a size 4 diaper.
• Wears 12 month clothing.
• Still working on getting his front tooth in, has 5 teeth total.
• Loves reading his Baby Peek-A-Boo book. 
• Likes bath time with brother, but only for a short amount of time. 
• Does not like being taken in and out of the car seat/stroller.
• Does not like green beans.
• Loves blueberries!

Henry's 11 Months Old

Watching Henry's personality develop has been such a cool thing. He is going to be our "funny" kid. There's one in every family. The one that is outgoing and always telling jokes. That's going to be our Henry. He's always happy to make someone else happy.

He's also such a sweet snuggler. He will just melt into your shoulder and make you never want to let go. Sigh, I know it won't last forever, but I hope his snuggliness is something that is a part of him always.

Also this month, "Henry, you are such a mess!" He probably hears that from me several times a day. He is into EVERYTHING! I don't ever remember Emerson being likes this. I mean, I turn my back for two seconds and I find him in the toilet with toilet paper everywhere. He cannot be trusted. He's also unwrapped a few presents now and eaten several pine needles. And I thought having a Christmas tree this year would be hard because of my toddler, ha, nope. Henry is the ornery one.

Speaking of Christmas tree, this was Henry's first year to pick one out and "help" decorate. It was also his first Thanksgiving. So fun watching these firsts.

Here is what's new this month:

Eating: Henry is a small fry, but he is an eating machine! Loves to eat most everything. A definite dislike would be green beans.

Being a second child has its downsides, but it has its upsides as well! He's been introduced to cookies and milk shakes already (just a few bites). Oh boy, he is going to have a sweet tooth like his momma and brother. If this had been Emerson, I would have killed over dead if he had sugar before his first birthday, ha. Like I said, there are upsides, Henry. Remember that.

Henry is now consistently nursing four times a day, with three meals. He is still biting me! So glad (and kind of sad) that our breastfeeding journey is coming to an end soon. And so proud that we made it this far.

Activity: He is getting more coordinated in pulling up and crawling so therefore we don't have as many bumps. He loves to pull up on everything, even when there is nothing to hang on to, like the wall. He has attempted to just stand up all alone, but has yet to master it.

Sleeping: We are back on a really good sleep schedule. Goes to bed anytime between 7-8 p.m. and wakes very consistently around 7 a.m. Sometimes he will sleep in as late as 7:30 (yay!). An even greater sleep accomplishment this month has been Henry waking up happy. He used to always wake up in the morning with tears, now he wakes up happy and can just play with his toes until I come get him. It's blissful.

Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

• Saw Santa Clause for the first time.
• Does not like Santa Clause.
• Cutting a new tooth, we are now up to four.
• Drinks from a straw and loves to have a cup with meals.
• Loves to high five daddy. Momma, not so much. 
• Loves to be chased around the house.
• Started playing peek-a-boo by himself.
• Loves to pull books off of shelves. 
• Shake his head no. 
• Has the sweetest curls behind his ears and on the back of his head. I'm not afraid to have him rock a curly mullet for a while. I don't want those curls to ever leave!

Henry's 10 Months Old

There were so many Fall firsts for Henry this month. First pumpkin patch, trunk-or-treat and Halloween! I love that I get to help make these wonderful memories for Henry.

Also, baby curls, lots of travel, and pulling up and bumping into everything pretty much sums up everything else that happened this month.

 

Here is what's new this month:

Eating: It finally happened, something most breastfeeding women dread...being bit! Ouch! Once he bites, he is done nursing, so hopefully he gets the picture fast.

He tried Spaghetti for the first time and loved it!

Per doctors request, I have been doing my very best to fatten my child up, so he has been eating a lot more fatty meats, dairy and rich fruits/veggies. I've even been putting butter on his toast, which of course he loves. He gained two pounds, so I guess the better on the toast trick worked : )

Activity: Henry loves to clap his hands, especially right after bath time. I guess that's when he's happiest? He has also started shaking his head "no", although, I don't think he knows what it means yet.


This boy! He pulls up on everything, thus creating lots of falls. This month he fell right on his upper lip (the Frenectomy) and busted it. There was so much blood! But thankfully it healed and is looking well.

Well, hello there, sticker. 

He figured out that he can take the sticker off. Grrr.

Sleeping: Two words, time change. We had finally caught a break on the sleeping issues. He had been sleeping 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. if not later for a few weeks and then BAM, the cursed time change occurred (that I once adored) and it messed up everything for Henry. He now wakes up before 7 no matter how much a try and tweak his schedule. Maybe it will even out in a few more weeks.


Doctor Visit Stats: 

• Height: 29 inches
• Weight: 19 lbs 7 oz
• Other: Had his blood drawn to check for iron levels and it was a horrible experience (mainly for me to watch). Thankfully all came back normal, so we don't have to do it again.
  

 Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

•  Has started to pat my back when I pat his.
• Celebrated first Halloween, dressed up as a Dalmatian puppy while big bro went as a firefighter.
• Went to his first pumpkin patch.
• Laughs at himself when he scrunches up his nose and snorts.
• Flew to Virgina for the first time for a wedding and had many other firsts: strayed up way too late, rode a carousel and saw Aunt Molly, Uncle Jonathan and Cousin Cassidy.
• Climbed a few steps on the stairs, yikes!
• Cutting 3 new teeth!

He is just the happiest baby!

Henry's 9 Months Old

We are entering my favorite phase of babyhood. Emerging personality, increased mobility, watching their little minds figure out new things, learning to eat what we eat, sleeping more at night...what's not to love? As most moms know, however, there are plenty of challenges with each month. The biggest one for me, right now, is simply watching my baby grow up. Along with all these emerging capabilities, means leaving behind more of the cute baby stuff. *sniff*

Here's what's new this month:

Eating: Henry got his first taste of table food, toast, and he loved it! He still eats some puree foods, but prefers foods he can feed himself. So far he has had peas, crackers, watermelon, green beans, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, cheese, lemon (liked it), broccoli, pasta, puffs and yogurt melts. He likes to drop his spoon or food to see what I'll do. He thinks it is a fun game, but I'm not playing it anymore!

Activity: He started crawling on all fours just right after he turned 8 months old. Eek.

Pulled up to stand for the first time. The hardest part of course is learning to get back down. It took him several frustrating weeks, but I think he is finally getting the idea of how to sit back down on his own. I can honestly say, that him standing in his crib crying because he could not get down has been my second least favorite challenge this month (the first being early wake-ups, see my complaint below).

Now he can get into a seated position on his own from lying down. This means he can crawl, stand and sit (all in one month)...next up, cruising and walking.

Has found out how to bring his hands together to clap. He doesn't do it out of excitement yet, but it's still very cute to watch. It always surprises him when he does it and will smile because he is so proud of himself.

Henry has also learned how to throw a tantrum. He screams and throws his head back as if the world has ended. I have to laugh at him, because I know what a real two-year-old tantrum looks likes, and Henry's "fits" are a walk in the park.

I've decided Henry is going to be my "climber" child. If he sees something on the ground, he tries to climb it. Usually its my legs, a pillow, toys, his brother, etc.

Sleeping: The early morning wake-ups continue and they need to GO. I do not start my day at 5 or 6 a.m. Someone please inform Henry of this news.

We've pretty much dropped down to just two naps per day. On Wednesday's I try to squeeze in a third cat nap because of church. Sometimes that just back fires on me and he is even crankier.

We hit another glorious Wonder Week. If you are a mom who once had a sweet baby, turn into a monster and suddenly hates sleep, then you need to look up the definition of a wonder week. It will help, I promise.

Doctor Visit Stats:

• Height-29 inches
• Weight- 17 lbs 9 ounces
• Other- My little guy only gained an ounce over three whole months : ( Doctor has suggested a few things to help increase his weight over the next few weeks. Can you blame Henry, though? He has been such a busy boy!

Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

• Took first airplane ride, did pretty well.
• Traveled to Tennessee for the first time to see Gramma and Pops.
• Gets first tooth, bottom right.
• Went to his first parade, the Lumberton Homecoming parade. The loud noises did not bother him.
• Starting to dislike his jumperoo. Now that he's mobile, he doesn't like being stuck in it. Time to put it away!
• Puts everything into his mouth, EVERYTHING.
• First bath in the kitchen sink. He had a really messy dinner : )
• Favorite book is Bubbles, Bubbles...just like big bro.
• Sat in the shopping cart for first time and loved it.
• Dislikes being held like a baby or being rocked : ( He prefers to be upright. 

Things to Look Forward to:

• Trip to Tulsa, OK for a wedding and to see Uncle Ty, Aunt Lindsey, Jack and Paxton.
• Trip to Washington D.C. area for a family wedding.
• First Halloween.

Henry's 8 Months Old

*Good news, we have a working computer again! Which means I can get back to updating my blog.*

Momma's boy! I knew separation anxiety kicked in about this age, but this is totally different, Henry has definitely turned into an all momma's boy. For now anyway : )  I walk into the room and his face lights up like a Christmas tree. I leave the room and his whole world has ended. It's kind of annoying, but also makes me feel very special. I'll keep him this way as long as I can.

I'm going to miss this toothless smile.

Here is a breakdown of this month:

Eating: He's tried a few new foods such as prunes, watermelon and yellow squash. Hated yellow squash, and loved the prunes and watermelon. Starting to think he hates all veggies. The watermelon he ate in his mesh feeder. Glad both my boys like(d) that thing.

He is always kicking those legs in the air!

Activity: Oh my, this boy has changed so much in this department. He went from barely sitting up tri-pod style, to sitting up, climbing over things, his own form of crawling (not quite all fours yet) and trying to pull up on things. He is one busy boy. Don't even get me started on diaper changes and getting dressed, let's just say it's very frustrating.

Because of all this activity, he now bumps into everything. He is currently sporting a lovely bruise on his forehead because of this busy behavior! 

Teething is in full force and is starting to affect his mood. I have seen the future through Emerson and I know that I have a long two year road of teething ahead. Sigh.

It was so hard to get a descent picture on his blanket. He won't stay still long enough.

Sleeping: This is my least favorite topic. On one hand, he's doing awesome! He slept all night long for me one night this month so I decided he was ready to night wean. It went fairly smoothly. He is sleeping at least 10-11 hours straight at night and takes 2-3 naps. On the other hand, we still have some battles. 

He is struggling with dropping his third nap and that has been torture. Every day is a guessing game. Makes it really hard to plan evening activities. Not really sure if I'll have an angel or devil on my hands. His first nap usually lasts one hour and his second nap lasts about two hours. If we get a third, it's just around 30 minutes. And sometimes it seems to do more harm than good. 

Bedtime is good, however he has started this early morning wake-up stuff that has got to go. I do not start my day at 5:30 and no one should! He wakes up crying so I know he's not up for the day, but he also doesn't easily settle back to sleep because he's already slept 10+ hours at that point. 

Anyway, I'm working on his schedule to see what works best for the little guy.

Henry's 7 Months Old

What a busy month this has been for this boy! Highlights include his first beach vacation, started solids, moved up to his own room, and started babbling. 

Brotherly love also grew this month : ) For the first time, Emerson asked to hold Henry and lately has been very interested in picking him up. He tries, but says "Hen Hen too heavy" and then moves on. Baby steps. It's taken 7 months for him to warm up to Henry, but I love seeing them interact in small ways. 

Eating: Henry got his first taste of solid food, butternut squash. He was not very impressed by it. In fact, food in general does not impress him. So far he has tried butternut squash, sweet potatoes, green beans, pears, carrots, apples, peaches and peas. His favorites were pears, peaches and peas. At first, the foods he tried would make him gag and he'd make sour faces, but over time he has really got that hang of  this whole eating solids business. He would still rather just play with the spoon than actually eat what's on it.

He also is still nursing every 3-4 hours, so 5-6 times a day, with 1-2 night feedings. Hoping we drop those night feedings soon!

Activity: This kid has found a few new sounds. He has started babbling, saying "yeah, yeah, yeah" and  "dadada."

Henry's phase of screaming seems to have passed, thank goodness! My poor ears couldn't take it anymore.

Diaper changes have become very interesting. All he wants to do is roll over. It's impossible now to dress him or change his diaper unless he is on his tummy.

Sleeping: big news in this department is that we moved him up to his own crib at night time. Not going to lie, this created some challenges. He actually started adding in a night waking and he once went to sleep without any fuss, but when we moved him he started protesting when I left the room. It took some time, but he adjusted and we are almost back on track.

Henry blessed me one night this month by sleeping 10 straight hours! Still not quite "sleeping through the night," but I'll take it!

We are in the awkward nap tranistion from 3-2 naps. Most days he takes 3, but some days he fights his last nap. It's so hard to predict. He did go through a short stint where he was taking short naps, but thankfully that didn't last long. Normal sleep schedule looks something like this:

7:00 a.m. Wake
9:00 a.m. Nap 1 (lasts 1-1.5 hours)
1: p.m. Nap 2 (2-3 hours)
5:00 p.m. Cat nap
7-8 p.m. Bedtime

Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

- First time to see and touch the ocean.

- Took first vacation.

- Took first trip to the zoo, Gulf Breeze zoo. He slept the whole time.

- Hair is finally starting to grow in! It's really dark on the sides and light brown on top.

- Makes spit bubbles.

- My best friend, Julie, came to visit and the boys loved spending time with her. 

- Likes to put his foot in his mouth and suck on his toes.

- His eyes have officially turned brown. No more hints of blue or green.

- Took first road trip with just mom and brother. Henry did pretty well, Emerson did not.

- Wears size 3 diaper and size 6-9 month clothing. Phasing out most 6 month clothing though.

- Dislikes most solid food.

- Likes to sit in his highchair at meal times with the rest of he family and happily chew on a spoon. 

Things to Look Forward to:

- Visiting friends in Houston, meeting Henry for the first time.

- Big brother starts school, so more one-on-one time with just momma.

- Trip to Tennessee for the TN vs. OU game. 

Henry's 6 Months Old

First off, I need to apologize for my blogging absence. But I have a really good reason, we have had no Internet working computer! I can type away on the iPad, but have had no way of uploading pictures and I know that's all you really care about it : ) But I'm back for now, so on I go with this post...

 

Happy half birthday, Henry! I have a feeling we may be celebrating this day more often in the future since the poor kids birthday is so close to Christmas.

Mobility has begun this month! He has learned to roll from back to belly and therefore can now roll both ways. He also has started tucking his legs under him and kicking...first signs of preparing to crawl. Yikes! 

Henry got to celebrate his first Fourth of July. We didn't do anything too exciting, but Henry was happy and content doing whatever we did. He only cried once when we popped a firework and I think that's because it scared Emerson and he was crying as well. The rest of the time he was fine. He also slept through all the evening chaos in our neighborhood, thank goodness!

 

Here is a breakdown of this months activities: 

Eating: Still eating breast milk every 2.5-3 hours. This is a huge milestone for me as well! My goal is to make it a year, so we are half way there. We don't do bottles too often, so he isn't that great at taking one, but it's getting better. I have also started making his baby food. We are going on a vacation and I don't want to mess with starting solids on the trip, so I'm getting it all ready for when we get back. 

 

Activity: He's our little Rollie Pollie now. At the start of the month, he had the problem with rolling from back to belly, but hated being on his belly and seemed to get so upset that he forgot how to roll back over. Baby problems! We started doing more tummy time and that helped out. By the end of the month he was a pro. 

Towards the end of this month he started sitting up tri-pod style for a few seconds. I remember it taking Emerson a little while longer to figure out sitting up as well, maybe it's because they are so long and lean it's more to balance? That's my theory anyway. 

Henry and Emerson have started to "play" together some. As much play as a toddler and baby can do anyway. It's a lot of Emerson shoving a toy at Henry and Henry laughing. It makes my heart so happy to see.

 

Sleeping: This was a big sleep accomplishment month! We transitioned him out of his Merlin's Magic Sleep Suite (which really was magic) and he started sleeping on his belly. It was a few rough days of transitioning. We started with naps and then once I felt comfortable with his rolling abilities, we worked on nights. He did really good at nighttime. 

We are consistently down to three naps in his crib. Still sleeping in our room (um, closet) at night. Hopefully after vacation we can get him moved up to his room for nighttime. I know I am ready to get my own space back! 

One night this month he slept ALL night! He hasn't done that in months. Hasn't happened since, but it was a nice surprise, so I'll take it.

Doctor Visit Stats:

- Height: 27 inches

- Weight: 17 lbs 8 oz (a whole pound bigger then his brother at this age)

Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

 

- Started biting his lower lip.

- Loves to smile! He has the most precious, shy smile. He always gets a huge grin and ducks his head or buries it in my shoulder.

- Celebrated first Fourth of July.

- Still loves bath time. 

- Doesn't mind his car seat or car rides. 

- Likes to play with his stuffed giraffe or moose while in the car. 

- Went to Sunday morning Bible class for the first time. He cried the first Sunday, but after that was fine.

- The ear piercing scream continues : (

- Does not like it when brother is in his space.

Things to Look Forward to:

 

- Beach vacation! First time to see the ocean.

- Starting solids.

- Getting moved up to his own room.

Big things to come next month!

Henry's 5 Months Old

Henry is just the sweetest baby. He's always been a good baby, but now I'm seeing more of his personality and I think this easy-going baby is here to stay (hopefully). Now, that doesn't mean he doesn't have his moments. Just like his big brother, he doesn't do well when he's tired, so I have to be careful not to push his limits when we are out and about. He has a scream that can make your ears bleed, so I try at all costs to avoid that : )

That famous four month sleep regression hit and this past month was all about finding ways to cope until we settled into a new sleep routine, which we eventually did.

My favorite things this month was that he found his toes and his tongue. It is too cute. He still doesn't roll over, but grabbing his toes has allowed him to roll from side-to-side, so I don't think we are far off from seeing him flop on over.

He is also gaining more upper body strength. I can now carry him on my hip and he doesn't flop over.

Eating: Still eating every 2.5-3 hours. He rarely can wait longer than 3 hours. We have not started solids yet. I plan on waiting until he is 6 months old, skipping the rice cereal and going straight to a puree. I hope to make as much food for him myself as possible, like I did with Emerson. This month I need to start making it and freezing it.

Activity: He tried out the Bumbo seat and Jumperoo for the first time this month. He is still warming up to the Jumperoo, but overall enjoys it for several minutes. He usually plays in it at night while he waits his turn for bath after brother. He did OK in the Bumbo as well, but he still needs to gain more back/neck control. After a minute or two he starts to slump over.

Sleeping: I was dreading this sleep regression because I remembered how much it affected Emerson. Thankfully, Henry didn't seem to be majorly affected. He did regress by adding in an extra feeding at night, he started to have trouble going to sleep at bedtime, and naps got shorter, but we seem to be back on track now. He dropped his 1 a.m. feeding on his own and now just wakes up once around 4-5 a.m. And instead of feeding him to sleep at night, I started putting him down while he was awake. I'm not going to lie, there were some tears involved, but Henry now goes down pretty easily without a fuss. There are still nights when I have go back in and rock him a bit, but I don't mind that :) Wednesday nights are the hardest because he is overtired by the time we get home from church.

I tested out different bedtimes this month, but 8 p.m. seems to be what his internal clock thinks is bedtime.

Naps are hit or miss on length. The morning nap always comes around 8:30/9 a.m. and is the shortest (45 mins) and his third nap in the afternoon is the longest. It can last anywhere up to three hours.

Still sleeps in the Pack n' Play in our closet (don't worry, it's a big closet with a vent). I am so ready to move him upstairs, but so not ready to walk up those stairs in the middle of the night. For now, he stays put.

- Height: 25 and 3/4 inches
- Weight: 14 lbs 8 oz

Likes, Dislikes and Other Milestones:

• likes going to Bible class. Doesn't seem to matter how tired he is, he always has a good time. Or so his teachers tell me : )
• wears 3-6 month clothing.
• wearing size 3 diapers.
• likes to hold a burp cloth in his hand and likes to shove it in his mouth to chew on. Speaking of chewing...
• nothing is safe in our house that is within reaching distance of Henry. He chews on everything. He especially loves my fingers and arm. Thank goodness there are no sharp teeth in there yet.
• takes four naps.
• has found a new form of communication, grunting.
• smacks his lips.
• eyes seem to be turning more brown, but still have a hint of green in them.
• swam in a pool for the first time. He did great, but seemed uninterested
• loves to play Peek-A-Boo and This Bumble Bee, and listen to me sing The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
• Dislikes when he sees me leave the room.
